Initially describing the Department of History, the famous Martin Luther King, Jr can be cited-We are not makers of history. We are made by history. The Department of History was initiated in Udalguri College in the year 1979 offering General Courses for Three Years Degree (TDC) courses besides History as a subject for Higher Secondary students. Major /Honors course was introduced in the year1997. The founding Head of the Department was Sukumar Dutta followed by Dr Nilima Dutta and presently Sarat Ramchiary has been serving as the HoD of the Department since the 15th of July 2021. The Department is located in RCC Block-1 of the College which also serves as the Administrative Block.

The Department has produced a number of Alumni who have been serving the nation in various capacities. Some of them are engaged in higher educational institutions, Higher secondary schools, middle and primary schools, the judiciary, health department etc.
